SOUTH AFRICAN SCOUT ASSOCIATION GAUTENG AREA 2nd BOKSBURG (St MICHAELS) SCOUT GROUP Activities Second Boksburg scout group host a variety of activities ranging from camps to hikes, canoeing to monkey bridges, abseiling to ordinary sailing. Scouts is an outdoors acitivty and although some of the training happens indoors the real testing of a scouts wits and skills happens outside in a variety of challenging envirnoments. Thursday Nights Second Boksburg Scout Troop meet every thursday night that is not in the school holidays. Here we spend two hours having fun and developing skills that will help the scouts develop into great young men. Sometimes the skills are practical and hands on like knots, lashings, handiwork, mapping and first aid, and some of the skills are more theoretical like codes, religious appreciation, electronics, and memory techniques. To develop the body and release a little energy the scouts play a variety steam release games and to reinforce the skills learnt, the scouts also play skills games that develop co-operation and team work while having a lot of a fun. Scouting is about the mix between fun and development of self and neither is bad for a well-rounded individual. Camps Second Boksburg is associated with a variety of camps. Different camps have different purposes, some camps are designed more around badge work, and others are centered around having fun and experiencing new and different activities. Tree House Camp This is a favourite of the boys. Succinctly the boys run it themselves. They design a three house in the trees and putting their pioneering skills to the test build a tree house a little way from the scouters eyes. After all their hard work at building the three house, they spend twenty four hours doing what they want to do up in the freedom of the tree rops. Camping Competitions A camping competition is either between patrols within the troop or against other troops in the district. Second Boksburg maintains one the highest standards of camping in Boksburg and Gauteng and boasts many competition titles, and by far the most in Boksburg. Once the skills are entrenched into the boys, they are able to have fun building gadgets and having a hand at gourmet foods all to empress the mean judges. One must remember, that a scout smiles and whistles under all difficulties!!! Water Adventure Water Adventure is the most fun camp that we offer. Generally we spend a week in April sailing, canoeing, skiing and tubing, in a wonderfully relaxed and fun atmosphere. The scouts are given the responsibility to look after the equipment but also to share in their brilliant exploits. AT THIS CAMP YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE THINGS TO TELL YOUR FRIENDS!!! Surivival You must not confuse our survival to that wimpy television show. There are no helicopters to fly you out at the first sign of trouble. Here we play for keeps travelling into deepest darkest Africa, the scouts learn how to really survive without mommy or daddy in the wings to bail them out. Rationed food, purified water, and rugged terrain in addition to a long list of skills been taught are only some of the challenges on this wicked camp. One should also not tell of the crocodile infested baths White Strip Camp Once you've been in scouts long enough to progress through the ranks and are given more responsibility, either by being made an assistant patrol leader, a patrol leader or a troop leader. For all their hard work, they are rewarded a white strip camp. Each year the scouters try to find some interesting things to spring on the group of boys who have seen this and done that to most things already because of scouts. Night Hikes Nights Hikes are similar to competition camps in the way that it pits skills against skills. But often Night Hikes tests the scouts abilities to follow direction and work as a team. Nights Hikes combine fun bases with skill bases all within a rugged environment. The challenge is great fun and it never hurts to try and take the title. Hikes There has been a much greater emphasis put on hikes lately. Hiking can take two forms. The troop usually runs an yearly hike where the whole troop explores some breath taking corner of our wonderful country. Usually this means a fairly easy hike so that the juniors are not too stretched and the seniors can perfect their logging techniques. The second kind of hikes are those run by the senior boys themselves. This is often done by patrol leaders and troop leaders and can happen at numerous times throughout the year depending on how energetic they feel and what their school schedules will allow. But if you like the great outdoors, and don't mind putting in a little effort for a spectacular reward then hiking has got to be for you. |
